wollongong community mural
Over the months of May and June 2003, Sam Newstead of each2each was involved with Wollongong City Council to create a community mural.
The Wollongong Community Mural project had two key objectives -
1. to educate local community about storm-water quality issues in their local catchment area
2. to create an engaging and attractive mural for public display
Workshops were run to educate and involve the community, and to give input to the designing, developing and the production of the mural on the corner of King Street and Northcliffe Drive, Wollongong.
Julie Brown, of Wollongong City Council, talked about the environment and storm-water issues with the workshop groups and educated the groups in environmentally responsible behaviour. Sam Newstead encouraged the participants to draw and paint images inspired by these issues.
The resulting mural is an engaging, high-impact, community-based visual tool to encourage individuals to address storm water issues.
This website documents the progression of that mural creation, and includes examples of the workshop art created by many of the participants, and the final roughs of the mural for approval.
